Description

The Social Justice minor works to develop students' capacities to be change agents for a wide range of social justice-related vocations, such as teaching, policy, counseling, advocacy, and nonprofit work. Through this minor, students examine issues of diversity, equity, and representation. Students also engage in inquiry regarding social justice issues and examine the complex relationships that exist among social justice and broader cultural, economic, educational, social, and political structures, policies, and practices.

 

Minor in Social Justice

6 courses distributed as follows:

  • One course must be an internship approved for academic course credit that is completed after the second year.  This field-based internship should match students' vocational interests in social justice and receive approval from the program chair. In addition, this experience must be registered as an official internship with the Office of Career Services .
  • 5 courses from the course listings below with
    • A maximum of 3 courses from a given discipline
    • No more than 1 course can be used for the major
    • Students interested in education should complete at least two education core courses (ANTH 310 Anthropology and Education, SJSA 200 Critical Issues in Education, SJSA 300 Methods in Teaching, or POLI 100 Issues in Politics-Education ).  Students interested in teaching should contact Rynnett Clark in Career Services.

Students interested in teaching should complete the social justice minor, including the recommended education core courses. Contact Rynnett Clark in Career Services to receive advising regarding non-traditional licensure options, including residency, master's degree, alternative licensure, and accelerated programs.

Social Justice and Education

This course explores how social inequities impact education, and how schooling affects social inequities. Emphasis is placed on recent issues in education. The course allows participants to consider what individuals and communities can do to ensure that all students have equitable educational opportunities.

Social and Behavioral Analysis SB

Inclusive Teaching

This course combines a field-based experience in a local, public school with course discussions and activities designed to promote the development of the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively teach. Emphasis will be placed on pedagogy that promotes inclusivity and equity.
