Microbiology camp is open to students ages
12-15, and enrollment is limited to 20 students. Registration fees are on a
voluntary three-tier scale ranging from $150 to $225 per person based on participants’
ability to pay.
Hendrix Professor of Biology Dr. Andrew
Schurko is the driving force behind the camp, and it is funded in part by
Schurko’s Morris and Ann Henry Odyssey Professorship. The camp is staffed by
Hendrix students who volunteer as instructors under Schurko’s oversight. Participating
students will work with microscopes, sample and grow microbes from the
environment, change the DNA of bacteria to make them glow, use modern lab
equipment and techniques, make food using bacteria, and design and carry out
experiments.
In preparing for this year’s camp, Schurko is
enthusiastic that this year will be even better than the last. He said, “I am
excited to be hosting the Microbiology Camp again this summer. The enthusiasm,
curiosity, and camaraderie from the participants last summer made a positive
and lasting impression. The instructors and I are looking forward to exploring
some new activities and ideas with the group of campers this summer.”
