Classics is the integrated study of the language, literature, art, society, history, and thought of the ancient Greeks and Romans. In Classics, we draw on a variety of approaches in order to develop a multi-faceted view of Greek and Roman culture--for that reason, Classics is an multi-disciplinary discipline, combining the methods and insights of philology, literary analysis, archaeology, religion, anthropology, history, and philosophy. The overarching goal of the Classics program is two-fold: to introduce students to the languages, literature, and cultures of Greek and Roman antiquity, and to help students develop the skills necessary to interpret, synthesize, and engage ancient material.
At Hendrix, we offer courses in Latin and Greek, as well as in Classical literature and culture. Courses listed under "Classics" (coded CLAS) require no knowledge of Greek or Latin.
There is both a major and minor in Classics at Hendrix, and both programs draw on courses in the language and culture of Greek and Roman antiquity.
