Hendrix Players Present ‘John Proctor is the Villain’ November 13-16

Love, betrayal, sex education, misconduct addressed in this dark comedy for ages 16 and up

CONWAY, Ark. (October 24, 2024) — The Hendrix Players will present four performances of John Proctor is the Villain by Kimberly Belflower, November 13-16, 2024, in Hendrix College’s Cabe Theatre (building 11 on the current campus map). John Proctor is the Villain is a comedy/drama set in a small town in Northeast Georgia. The story centers around a group of female high school juniors who are starting a feminism club at the school just as they are beginning to study Arthur Miller’s classic play The Crucible in their literature class. As they navigate love, betrayal, sex education, and misconduct, the students begin to see the parallels between themselves and characters in The Crucible. Rising to meet the challenges before them, the young women discover a lot about strength, power, truth, and friendship.

Like the characters in her play, playwright Kimberly Belflower is from a small town in Appalachian Georgia. Currently a professor at Emory University in Atlanta, she was inspired to begin writing the play because tremendous growth of the #MeToo movement and after reading The Witches by Stacy Schiff in 2017.

Students are the backbone of every Hendrix Players production. Some of the students working on this play are Autumn Alsup ’26 (Sound Designer/Poster Designer), Lovey Krone ’25 (Stage Manager), Marveon Berry ’27 (Mason), Miki Clendenin ’26 (Raelynn), India Hayes ’26 (Nell), Maddy Konkle ’28 (Shelby), Lydia Le ’26 (Beth), Cora Mattson ’27 (Ivy), Liam Puls ’26 (Lee), Grace Moody ’28 (Ms. Gallagher) and Forest Allbritton ’27 (Mr. Smith).

John Proctor is the Villain is directed by Professor Antonio Horne.
