Hendrix Scholars Return with Accolades for Literary Journal and One-Act Play
CONWAY, Ark. (February 4, 2025) – Hendrix College celebrates five students whose work earned awards in the Southern Literary Festival’s 2025 undergraduate writing contest:
Literary Magazine:
First place: Aonian | Hendrix College (Editor in Chief: Annie Elliot; Associate Editor: Tillie Lefforge; advisor Julia Lee McGill)
Playwriting:
Second place: “As Freud Would Say,” by Noah Carroll
Ty Jaeger, Creative Writing Program Director, annually submits student work to the Southern Literary Festival’s contests. The Creative Writing Program is generously supported by the Hendrix-Murphy Foundation.
Hendrix faculty commented on the students’ accomplishments, including Colleen Mayo, Hendrix-Murphy Fellow and Assistant Professor of English, who said, “It is always thrilling to see our students’ talents and hard work—so much of which is born from classrooms and our creative writing programming—get recognized. We’re tremendously proud.”
Similarly, commendations for Playwright Noah Carroll included: “...Noah was one of six students selected for the Hendrix-Murphy Playwriting Intensive in London this past summer, for which I was the faculty supervisor,” wrote Lavinia Roberts, Hendrix-Murphy Fellow and Assistant Professor in Theatre Arts at Hendrix. “Noah utilized this opportunity to study with professional London-based playwrights and wrote ‘As Freud Would Say’ as part of this playwriting intensive. I am delighted that his talent, hard work, and dedication to his craft is being recognized...”
All winners are invited to read their work at the Southern Literary Festival, set for April 3-5 at Blue Mountain Christian University in Blue Mountain, Miss. Winning works will be published in this year’s Southern Literary Festival anthology.
