The Hendrix College Chamber Orchestra

The Hendrix College Chamber Orchestra was established in 1990 and operates in a setting that nurtures growth, mindfulness, and resilience. It brings together students from a variety of disciplines and backgrounds, who share rich and diverse interests and talents.

One of the orchestra's primary goals is to unite a group of unique individuals through their shared passion, interest, and aspirations for musical experiences. Together, they explore a diverse repertoire that demonstrates its enduring relevance across centuries and cultures, both within the Hendrix community and beyond.

With an average of 10-15 musicians, the group maintains a focus on individual attention within a holistic experiential learning environment. Members support each other through their musical journeys, celebrating successes and learning from challenges, thus driving each other toward more meaningful achievements.

Participation is open to members of the Hendrix and Conway communities who have appropriate musical backgrounds and proficiency with orchestral instruments.

Audition Process

The Chamber Orchestra warmly welcomes every Hendrix student, as well as Hendrix faculty, staff, and Conway community members to audition, regardless of their major, background, or previous musical experience.

Whether you are seasoned in playing a string instrument or new to the musical journey, if you are keen on making music in a positive and collaborative environment, learning valuable and purpose-driven life management skills, and making a meaningful artistic impact on your community, we invite you to join the orchestra today!

Auditions for Hendrix Students occur at three times each academic year:

  • Fall semester, first week of classes: for all students wanting to participate in Chamber Orchestra during that Fall semester.

  • Spring semester, first week of classes: This is for new members wanting to join the Chamber Orchestra for that Spring semester. Chamber Orchestra members continuing from the Fall semester do NOT need to re-audition.

  • Spring semester, last week of classes: This is for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors who want to participate in Chamber Orchestra during the upcoming Fall semester. If students do not wish to or are unable to complete their audition at this time, they still have the option to perform it during the first week of classes of the upcoming Fall semester.

Hendrix faculty, staff, and Conway community members are welcome to join at the timeframes above, or alternatively, reach out to the orchestra's music director (Alex Polyakov—polyakov@hendrix.edu).

Learning Goals

Each academic year, the Chamber Orchestra participates in at least four performances, including the Family Weekend concert in the fall, where members perform alongside the Hendrix College Choir and Wind Ensemble, and the notable Waltz Night in March.

The learning outcomes align with those of the Music Department, with a particular emphasis on “developing technical proficiency and musical self-awareness, as well as studying, interpreting, and performing music while synthesizing knowledge gained through lessons, ensembles, coursework, and everyday life experiences.”

Moreover, members of the orchestra will naturally acquire practical skills and insights in several key areas:

  • Community Building and Nurturing - Orchestra participants take ownership of their experiences, fostering a sense of community within the rehearsal space and extending this to a broader audience of music aficionados through recitals and social media engagement.
  • Efficient and Engaged Learning Skills - Within the demanding academic environment, where time is precious, members learn to optimize their study and practice times, enhancing personal relevance and joy in learning through self-awareness and constructive self-assessment.
  • Music Practicing & Rehearsing Skills - Orchestra members apply core principles of musical practice and rehearsal, such as segmenting large pieces into manageable sections, viewing mistakes as learning opportunities, and practicing active listening.
  • Basics of Positive Psychology - Experiences within and outside the rehearsal space are informed by fundamental concepts of positive psychology, including a growth mindset and focusing on personal strengths.
  • Personal Reflection and Accountability (Hansei) - By embracing the principles of 'Hansei,' all orchestra members engage in regular, reflective feedback activities that not only promote a positive and conscious learning environment but also strengthen community ties. These practices are valuable in their daily applicability.
  • Individual Goal Setting and Growth (Kaizen) - Learning goals are tailored to the orchestra’s current needs and aspirations, largely based on member feedback and upcoming performance schedules. Participants engage in mindful practices that integrate the principles of continuous improvement and efficiency, as advocated in literature like 'The 12 Week Year,' 'Atomic Habits,' and 'Elastic Habits,' along with the philosophy of Kaizen."
