Catalog 2016-2017

Hendrix-Murphy Foundation Programs in Literature and Language

Hendrix-Murphy programs enrich the study of literature and language for the College as a whole as well as for students with intensive interest in those areas.

The Murphy Scholars Program supports deeper, more focused exploration for a select cohort of students who take Oxford-style tutorials in literature and language and engage in literary or language-related travel, research, and service. In addition, all students benefit from Hendrix-Murphy’s support of study abroad in literature and language, summer language programs, and independent projects in literature, writing, and language studies.

On campus, students participate in Hendrix-Murphy through Language House, an immersive residential community; the Writing Center, which provides peer tutoring in academic writing; creative writing competitions; foreign language cultural activities; a student reading series; craft talks by professional writers; and book discussion groups.

Every year the Distinguished Visitors in Literature and Language Program brings to campus a slate of literary scholars, theater directors, and writers in all genres. While in residency these acclaimed writers present lectures, readings, and performances, lead classes, and meet and work informally with students.
